Investigating the Impact of Labour Market Insecurities on the Well-Being of Young People: A Mixed Methods Approach

There is an urgent need to understand the consequences of individual-level labour market insecurities for youth, as unemployment, extended periods of temporary employment, and mini-jobs are widespread phenomena. Crises, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, are expected to have potentially detrimental effects on the future of young people, often referred to as ‘scar effects’ (Unt and Täht, 2020). A key aspect of social inclusion is youth’s subjective well-being. This presentation will reflect on the conceptual and methodological challenges of disentangling the relationship between labour market insecurity and youth well-being. Drawing on the Horizon2020-funded EXCEPT project and the Horizon Europe EUROSHIP and MapIneq projects, it examines both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. I will particularly focus on the research process, methodological hurdles, and innovative practices in interpreting biographical data to address the following questions: How do labour market insecurities affect youth well-being and health? What are the spillover effects for other family members? What are the effective coping strategies that foster transformative resilience in the face of labour market insecurities? Which policies have been shown to successfully mitigate the negative effects of labour market insecurities on youth well-being?
